In February 2018 I finally got a couple tops that I had been coveting that were to spin forever. I quickly realized that a top that spins for 90 seconds wasn't what I actually wanted. I stumbled upon a Jim Skelton video and the rest is history albeit only 2 months of history. Currently I have 20 real tops, eight of which are Billetspin, and I'm having a blast. My bank accounts are diminished but my happiness is increased enough to make it worth it.

Seeing all of the customized spinners and the quite unusual metal combinations.

As a kid, I can remember spinning tops for hours on my Mom's coffee table and timing my spins to get the best time. I guess things haven't changed much, or maybe I'm just a bigger kid I knew I had a problem, when a Billetspin top was delivered one morning and my wife had the mailbox key and wasn't going to be home until the evening. I waited for about an hour before I ended up fishing the package out through the drop box side of the mailbox.

One evening, I was playing with a 10-gram timascus/titanium top and a super-fancy new glass spin station. Before long, I realized that if I drop-spun the top from an inch or two above the station, it would bounce like crazy and make an extremely satisfying sound. So, I did that for a while...slowly getting bolder until I decided I'd drop spin the top from about three inches and get it on video. The resulting shot was pretty amazing, especially when slowed down. So, I posted the video to the top maker's group. Before long, I was getting my fix of that magically affirming feedback that Facebook provides in the form of likes and comments, and generally feeling pretty good about myself.
Just as I was ready to call it a night, the maker of the glass station chimed in on the post and (very correctly and politely) pointed out that if I continued doing that, I'd destroy the station. Well, my foolish pride instantly melted into shame. I realized I'd been inadvertently endangering the work of an artist I revered...for a silly (if not entertaining) video. Doh! I apologized to the maker and vowed to chill out with the crazy drop-spins. He was very cool about it (and let's be honest; he probably knows first-hand just how rad a bouncing top sounds on his stations). Anyhow, at age 41, I sometimes assume that all my embarrassing life lessons are in the past. They never are, my friends.
However, another thing I remember about the exchange was a community member who must have read the comments and sensed my initial excitement and eventual remorse. He wrote: "Awesome! Keep on doing what you enjoy. Tops are meant to be enjoyed and you're definitely doing that." That felt good. The next day, I reflected upon expensive toys and how we can choose to be careful or reckless with them. Within reason, we shouldn’t let fear get in the way of fun. But we also must respect the art and the artists we love. I hope everyone out there employs a good mixture of caution and derring-do with tops, stations, and anything else that brings you joy.

Since getting into spin tops, I now see normal everyday objects and question. Would that spin? How long would that spin for? Everywhere I go, I am playing a "Would it spin game." THANK YOU Rich, for fueling my OCD...
Ohh, and my kid too, he says: "Dad look, this looks like a top!" LOL

I think my favorite time I’ve had was doing this past Christmas scavenger hunt. Sue did a great job running it and I love the top I got as a runner up.
